Old hands and new crews sweep the decks at sailing cup awards
Old sailing hand Steve Gent and sailing partner Viv Roberts swept up most of the silverware on display at the Henley Sailing Club awards night although new sailing winners Dominic Hall, Emma Cadwallader and Richard Conway-Jones also achieved their first cup successes. Steve Gent and Viv Roberts had the greatest haul winning 7 first prizes, 2 seconds and also winning the Fred Zimmerman prize for the over-40s in their vintage National 12 boat Saranac. Second placed winner was new Commodore Tim Saunders crewed by his son Gus with 3 first prizes and 1 second in a National 12. Third placed cup winners were Tim Haigh and Peta Bowyer with 3 firsts in their Enterprise class boat.
Helene Hook, the outgoing Commodore of Henley Sailing Club, congratulated the many individuals who had competed in one of the liveliest racing seasons in recent years at the Wargrave based club. Helene said,
“The Saranac sailing partnership of Twyford-based Steve Gent and Viv Roberts has achieved a remarkably consistent performance throughout the sailing calendar from the cold waters of March to the icy winds of November. Viv has additionally won the prestigious Campbell Challenge Cup raced over 13 summer evenings against 18 other boats. The spread of winners and runners up this year from new Juniors like the Hall brothers, Dominic and Jonathan, to the old hands like John Thornton, Carol Stitson, Alan Cadwallader and Jeff Manning has enabled everyone to win and compete for some of these fantastic trophies and prizes.
New Commodore Tim Saunders added, “We want the club to be a lively place where both fun sailing and better skills for all sailors can be achieved. We are hoping to work with the Royal Yachting Association during 2010 to create more coaching opportunities as well as redefining some of our Challenge Cups to make them more widely available and allow an even greater spread of winners. Everyone is welcome to enjoy both the river and the sport of sailing and club membership is open to all. We have a superb social events list and excellent Sunday afternoon teas on the lawn. Come down to the club on any Sunday afternoon from April to November or contact us through our website www.henleysailingclub.org.uk. Our new season starts on 28 March 2010 at 11.00 so why not join us for some recession-beating thrills and spills?”
