On Sunday 5 September over 50 boats from sailing clubs across the capital will converge on Greenwich Yacht Club to take part in The London Regatta.
The regatta now in its fifth year takes advantage of the annual test closure of the Thames Barrier which creates non-tidal conditions on the up-river side towards London, allowing competitors to race in open water of the River Thames without needing special qualifications or tidal water experience.
Racing in a number of different boats, the event welcomes disabled and able-bodies sailors, as RYA Regional Development Officer for London and Thames Valley, Guy Malpas explains: “This is a unique event in London, offering the opportunity for disabled and able-bodied sailors to compete together on equal terms and is a highlight on the London sailors’ calendar.”
Three courses will be laid out between the Thames Barrier and O2 Arena for different classes of boats. The first of a minimum of three races on each course begins at 10 a.m. and public entry to Greenwich Yacht Club on the day is free.
Steve Wilson, GYC Dinghy Section Captain, said: “The London Regatta is a fantastic event and there are plenty of opportunities for spectators to come and watch. Good vantage points are from the Thames Path or visitors are welcome at Greenwich Yacht Club, where there will be hot and cold food and soft drinks available in the Clubhouse, plus a full bar service”.
The London Regatta is a partnership between the RYA, RYA Sailability, Greenwich Yacht Club and the London Nautical School.
Race finish times will depend on the weather conditions, and the presentation of awards is expected to take place early afternoon.
