Laser Vago Inland Championships at Rutland Sailing Club

by Edward Deacon 17 Oct 2011 08:10 BST 15-16 October 2011

A great weekend for the Vagos at Rutland with their Inland National Championships. 15 Vagos joined Laser 4000s, 5000s, 2000s and Vortexs. The fleet of 6 single-handed boats had their own competition within the fleet of 15, the first time that this has happened. Rutland SC set a windward-leeward course, with wind in the south with a few shifts to keeps us on our toes and making racing more interesting.

Saturday started good weather but light winds. R1 was a chasing pack with some very close racing, the positions change all the time. Dave Baxter just getting front of Rob Henderson and Adam Chubbock and Jack Holden & Jack Munnelly followed by Martin and Richard Keen just enough wind to occasionally get on the wire. R2, R3 saw the wind drop more, making the racing even closer, Ed Deacon made his way to the front of the fleet in R2 but was finally overtaken By Dave and Jack Holden & Jack Munnelly. R3 was getting into the evening calm and was shortened but again a lot of tactical tacking making it a close interesting race Dave taking it again followed by the 2 Jacks and Ed.

Sunday had a little more wind to start with and it slowly increased as it swung around to the west. R4 started and with over 10 mph winds (more than forecasted) which allowed all of us to have a close tactical race again places changing all the time throughout the whole fleet. R5 the course moved further round to the west and again produced another close race with Dave again leading but the rest of the fleets very close Paul Welch moving up the pack. R6 the wind dropped towards the evening calm with the races eventually being shortened and finished at the windward mark. It was good to see the improvement and effort put in by everyone taking part in this weekend.

Congratulations to Jack Holden & Jack Munnelly who won the title of Double-handed National Inland Champions and Dave Baxter becoming the first Single-handed National Inland Champion.
