Back on Setley Pond after last year’s ice saw a full Boxing Day attendance for the annual Junior Model Yacht Regatta. As in previous years boats came in all shapes and designs, from classic to the latest carbon fibre back shed developments in monohulls to multihulls fabricated out of drinks bottles. This year there were 18 monohulls compared to 28 multihulls. As forecast, competitors and spectators were greeted with a dry but a cloudy day and a fresh South West breeze.
Never-the-less, the gusts that did come made it tricky resulting in some over-canvassed craft capsizing. Robert Jardine in the rescue boat was kept busy, especially between races recovering those that could not make the crossing.
Five races were completed with one discard in both fleets.
The top two monohulls were on an equal 6 points but “Hugo Boss” sailed by James Nicholson just pipped by virtue of a 4th place, Annabel Hutchinson with “Skittle Boat” with a 5th place, to the post to win the Setley Cup, with third place going to Jessica Nicholson with an identical boat to James.
In the multihull class “Big Apple”, probably the first true bottle boat to win, sailed by Flynn Luxton with two firsts, a 2nd and a 4th won the Seahorse Trophy, followed by “Maxicat” sailed by Alex Walters and one point behind Alex was Emma Bennett with “Wildcat” in third place.
Once again many thanks to the starting/finishing line teams of Chris Baldwick, Chris Neve, Rick Walters and Ado Jardine and our recorders Ann Brunskill and Hannah Neve.
