January blog from Insurance4dinghies sponsorship winner Scott Wallis
In January, I started my Transitional Squad Training. The first weekend, at Grafham Water, consisted of one day sailing, which was in light winds, and a Land Day on the Sunday, giving us information on fitness, hydration, diet and psychology. It was really cold and the lack of wind meant we did not go afloat for long, but we spent time on boat setup and tuning, which was useful.
The second transitional training weekend, also at Grafham Water, was much windier and we had two days on the water. The Saturday was 15 to 20 knots and so it was perfect for practising our routines and gaining confidence in that weather. However Sunday was even windier, 25 to the 30 with huge gusts. Four boats managed to launch and then a 40 knot squall came through and everyone on the lake capsized. The rest of the boats were held ashore until the safety team had everyone back upright. There was no sailing in the afternoon so we used the time for theory sessions.
We are looking forward to some more squad training in February plus the first GBR Team Selector Event at Grafham Water.
Best regards, Scott
