18-19 February 2012
After a large turnout over the Valentine Weekend which was convincingly won by ex Olympian Colin Simonds this weekend 10 boats came out to play.
Saturday's conditions were brisk and challenging between 18 to 25+ knots in squalls which caught a few people out and you had to pump hard to stay afloat. The ever calm and smiling Graham Bailey was the winner of the day scoring a 3rd and two first places in an impressive display of boat handling.
On the water rivals Mark Downer and Bruce Huber did not give each any room and match raced each other in nearly all the races sometimes no more than an few inches apart testing each other on rules and sailing skills.
On Sunday the conditions could not be different, sunshine, steady breeze although hats and gloves still indicated its mid winter sailing with water temperatures around 6C and the morning air just above freezing. Graham Bailey proved unbeatable in all three races by reading the local waters and winds well.
Rudy Jurg, who had struggled the previous day staying afloat, found form by finishing 2nd in all 3 races although was challenged in every race by Julia Bailey who amongst the Illusion sailors can sail most close winded of all. No doubt a practice which will come of good use in her summer sailing program.
Overall winner Graham Bailey, 2nd Rudy Jurg, 3rd Julia Bailey.
Next weekend sees the Illusion Nationals for which at least 25-30 boats are expected and will prove a spectacle in Bembridge Harbour or weather permitting off Silver Beach.
