Enterprises at Wigan Sailing Club

by Tim Finch 13 Jul 2012 10:51 BST

Whilst much of the country was suffering from torrential rain, floods and little wind, the oasis that is Wigan SC welcomed Enterprise sailors from the NW with wall to wall sunshine and a breeze that rose gradually through the day.

After some energising bacon butties, the fleet started on time in a light breeze. Royston Taggart crewed by current under 21 Champion Alan Roberts and Tim and Jacky Finch immediately tacked onto port and gradually drew away from the fleet. These two boats were never far apart for most of the race but Roy and Alan were able to pull away on the final run to win. Mike Maddocks and Carys Done took third spot on the line from Richard Hemingway and Chris Morton.

Lunch of individually spiced chicken curry was taken outside in the sun. (It's worth going to Wigan for the food alone!)

For the second race OD Ken Bright made good use of the change of wind direction and was able to set a long beat diagonally across the lake with three reaches back down to the leeward mark. Chris Moss and Trevor Gwynne got away well from the start but Royston and Alan lead at the first mark with Tim and Jacky languishing at the rear after an infringement on the line. However, they showed good boat speed to come through to challenge the leaders on the third lap, but Roy and Alan were able to hold on to win with Richard and Chris in third spot.

Conditions were idyllic for the third race with sunshine, a good strong breeze and planing reaches. Tim and Jacky pulled away from the start and won from Mike and Carys who took second place and third overall on the last mark.

At the prize giving Royston thanked Wigan SC for the wonderful friendly welcome, the superb food and great courses. We will be back.
