Junior Camel Week at Rock Sailing & Water Ski Club scored another success this year. Forty-four entrants, with ages from 8 to 17 years, enjoyed and overcame challenging conditions during the six days of racing, under the watchful eyes of Race Officer Mark Dinwoodie and his team.
For Race 1, on Friday, the Cornish Holidays Cup, the winds varied from an 8-9 knot breeze to speeds of up to 18-20 knots. The fleet coped well with the conditions, especially the Laser 4.7s and a 420 with Matt Chaplin at the helm and crewed by Simon Cox, which came late to the start line yet managed to finish in third place. The eventual winner, Jenny Dinwoodie, in her Laser 4.7 was followed by Ellie Nuttall also in a Laser 4.7.
Race 2 was the Junior Goblets, for boats with crews under 15, with kinder winds. Emily Lloyd was the winner in her Laser Radial but Jake Edwards in his Feva showed well in this race.
On Sunday the Bubbles Trophy was sailed in winds of Force 3 – 4. While part of the series, with all boats taking part, this race is specifically for Toppers. The first Topper home was sailed by Jago Beer-Robson. A pattern for the series was emerging, with the top three boats all on with the same points score and with all to play for.
Monday's race was the Junior Cup, for boats with crews aged from 15 to 17, the senior and more experienced end of the fleet. In lighter winds Jennie Dinwoodie was first over the line with Jodie Harbour a close second behind.
The final race, for the Vicuna Cup, started with only three points between the top three boats. The wind strength was challenging for the sailors – stronger than on Day 1. Ellie Nuttall was the winner with Jennie Dinwoodie in second place and Hannah Shelton in her Laser 4.7 who came fourth in this race and fourth overall for the week, getting a special mention by the Race Officer for her consistent sailing.
Winner of the week's series and the Hendraburnick Cup was Jennie Dinwoodie. Ellie Nuttall took second place while Emily Lloyd was third.
As always, activities off the water added to the success of the week, a buffet disco, barbecue and the family Club Night and the ever-popular Swallows and Amazons, sponsored by Jack Wills, adding to a memorable event for the competitors.
Junior Camel Week is sponsored by Cornish Holidays and Ann's Cottage.
