Dozens of visitors took to the water for the first time at Ullswater Yacht Club's annual Open Day on Saturday, June 8.
Glorious summer sunshine greeted the visitors and the club was very busy with lots of activities on and off the water. Newcomers were taken out for a sail on a range of different boats, from cruisers to dinghies.
Mike Adams of Carlisle was a popular choice for 'trips round the bay' in his Tempest keelboat. On one of his trips he ended up with eight 'crew' in his two-man boat - seven youngsters and a dad!
On Saturday afternoon, Commodore John Spivey officially launched Ullswater Sailing School. One of the school's new learn-to-sail Topper dinghies was ceremoniously launched by a group of instructors along with principal David Clarke. The young instructors are all club members who were themselves taught to sail at the club and are keen to pass their love of the sport on to others.
A number of visitors have already signed up to take part in the courses based at the club which include everything from a two-hour taster session to a five-day Royal Yachting Association course. The school has a range of boats to suit all ages from eight years, and all abililties.
If you missed the Open Day, you will still be welcome to visit the club and see what it is like to sail on Cumbria's most beautiful lake. The club is on the North-east shore of the lake, about two miles from Pooley Bridge on Howton Road.
