All is set for the Setley Cup model yacht race at Setley Pond, Lymington on Boxing Day. Racing starts at 11am for both monohulls and multihulls - many made on Christmas Day or in a panic on Boxing Day morning.
We have this weather update from the Race Officer, Stuart Jardine: "The weather looks like being fine and crisp with a light frost first thing, the wind looks likely to be the problem. A light 6 knot wind from the North, followed by a very light 2 knot wind from the South East by 1200. Regrettably a wind from the North is not easy for racing model yachts without any remote control. As a result it is likely that both the Competitors and the Race Team look likely to be taxed to their limit with fingers crossed."
This event has tight rules and the craft may only be released by children under 18 years, occasionally a blind eye has been known for parents with children under 2 in their arms releasing the model.
There are trophies for the monohulls and the multihulls winners, the Setley Cup and the Seahorse trophy respectively.
The rules are:
- Max length overall: 66cm
- Sails must fit into a rectangle 100cm x 50cm (can be rearranged to fit e.g. turning jib upside down)
- No stored power, which rules out batteries, radio control, rockets etc.
- Boats must be launched for each race by a child
- There are separate starts for monohulls and multihulls
