Allen Brothers Enterprise Nationals at Looe Sailing Club - Day 4

by Matt Velamail 29 Jul 2015 18:33 BST 25-31 July 2015

The 134 sailors launched in slightly fresher conditions compared to yesterday and all feeling slightly sore in the body as well as in the head after fancy dress night. Feeling a bit more in touch with his feminine side, Mr Woodward decided to keep his make-up on for the day, maybe hoping to flutter his eyelashes at Mr Brown or Mr Honnor on a cheeky port/starboard.

Race 1 started cleanly, behind the gate boat of Steve Sargent & Kiera Slyvester. Mark & Steve, Tim & Rich, Chimp & Hannah and Steve & Alex were all in the leading pack and started pulling away engaging in a tight battle. Alice Allen & Sharky finally got their act together and managed to avoid hitting the guard boats and started pulling through the top pack, eventually finishing 6th. Mark & Steve took the first win of the day, followed by Paul & Hannah and Tim & Rich.

Phil & Will were the gate boat in race 2 however, after several lifts, that the rest of the fleet missed and low pressure, 2 general recalls the race finally got away in building champagne breeze and sun. Tim & Rich reached the windward mark first, followed closely by Matt & Tim and Steve & Alex. Tim & Rich played the shifts expertly and just kept extending their lead on the rest of the fleet eventually doing a horizon job and sealing the win easily. Steve & Alex took Matt & Tim on the reach and took it home to 2nd, ahead of the boys with John & Chris Blundell having a cracking race also finishing a close 4th.

Race 3 began after Neil & Sophie opened the gate, with the Inland Champions just about to round first before Tim & Rich just sneaked in and having a great couple reaches to extend away. The chasing Mark Lunn & Ste Blackburn took advantage of the building wind to go ahead of Neil & Sophie. Upwind is was neck and neck, each boat taking a piece of each other, neither able to show a speed advantage over the other. Saulty claims he saw a shoal of fish feeding indicating a wind shift and managed to take it and just edged Mark & Steve on the line.

Tim & Saulty and Mark & Steve are now showing as the clear favourites for the championships and the battle for the overall win will be hard fought between them over the next two days. The wind is forecast to drop and get shifty so there may also be contenders to showing their face in their preferred conditions.
