Allen Brothers Enterprise Nationals at Looe Sailing Club - Day 5

by Matt Velamail 30 Jul 2015 19:56 BST 25-31 July 2015

After 2 days of heavy racing the sailors are starting to feel the effects. Thursday morning greeted us with warmer, sunnier conditions and much lighter wind.

The fleet launched at a slightly later time and after arriving at the wait course were delayed for approximately half an hour as the committee waited for the wind to settle. On a frantic start line championships favourites, Tim Sadler & Rich Sault, took a large blow from another boat to their starboard bow which resulted in a large hole.

After mounting the rescue boat, they were gaffer-taped and released back to the water, following a general recall of the fleet. This was not what they needed in order to battle for the win and could seriously hinder their chances.

The race then got away cleanly, lead away by Martin Honnor & Victoria Gomm. Paul Hobson & Hannah Sadler came out of the gate first and took the shift to cross right across the whole fleet. They rounded in the leading pack with Jonny Woodward & Karen Alexander showing the way. Phil & Laura Bevan also played the shift to perfection and followed close behind. After a tussle Chimp & Hannah managed to creep ahead to lead and extended to take their first bullet.

Unfortunately Tim & Rich finished in the teens in this race as a result of their damaged boat.

The next race started in breezier conditions, this time Steve & Alex went out to the left of the course followed closely by Paul & Hannah, on a big lift, John Berry & Neil Bawden also had a cracking beat and rounded in the leading group with Tim & Rich, Jeremy Stephens & Darren Roach, The Fry Brothers, Jonny & Karen also.

Chimp & Hannah overtook Steve & Alex on the first reach with their blistering reach speed. From here they managed to hold on and then by a miracle of nature, a spectacle never observed before by any human being, the perfect situation arrived for BAD BOUTROS. The last beat to the finish, a fresh force 3, and cameras pointing on the boat: these 3 factors resulted in Hannah hiking out for the first time(!), the boat was flat and Chimp never experienced such speed. Their second bullet was sealed to cap a perfect day.

The championship has been mixed up today and now the three boats most consistent and looking like the favourites are Chimp & Hannah, Tim & Rich and Steve & Alex.

Who knows if we will race tomorrow but it will be tight whatever happens. Stay tuned.
