Johnny Durcan on day 1 of the SF by Sonata India International Regatta © Sucharita Kamath
The second day of racing at the India International Regatta was successfully completed with the full cooperation of the weather. The day started quite feisty with about 12 knot winds, white caps and 2 metre high waves. By the time the course was laid and the first race was started the wind had come down to about 10 knots from the north east. The wind held steady for three races in all the classes, after which time it turned 30 degrees to the north and the course had to be re-aligned. The wind dropped further to about 6 knots when the last Optimist race was started and due to strong currents their race had to be abandoned.
At the end of the day, 4 races were completed for the 29ers, Laser Radial and Laser 4.7 and 3 races for the Optimists and the Windsurfers.
In the 29er class both the Danish pair and Indian pair won 2 races each and are now in 1st and 2nd position respectively. Jayalakshmi/Aditi who were in 2nd position yesterday, finished poorly in one of the races courtesy to a capsize, and ended the day in 3rd position. Among the windsurfers, Dayne Coelho continued to dominate and won all three races.
In the Laser Radial class Johnny Durcan won 3 of the 4 races conducted to break the tie at the top. The Laser 4.7 saw things move around at the top with of Mohammad Abdulkareem of the UAE now in the lead.
The Optimist boys fleet Chitresh Thatha is still tied with UAE sailor Saif Saeed while Uma Chouhan has managed to nudge ahead of IODA Asians bronze medalist Harshita Tomar.
The green fleet had their races in the inner harbour but ship movements disrupted the proceedings and only 2 races could be held for them. The conditions were far easier for them in the sheltered harbour with about 8 to 10 knots wind and flat water. Yesterday's leader Lepakkshi capsized but still holds on to her lead amongst the girls while Agastya Mehra leads the table in the boys fleet.
