25-29 November 2015
Curtains were brought down on the final day of the SF by Sonata India International Regatta 2015 November, on the 30th in the presence of Guests of Honour, Rear Admiral Alok Bhatnagar, Flag Officer TN, Indian Navy, IG SP Sharma, commander Coast Guard, TN & Puducherry, Mr. S.N.Subramanyam, Deputy MD of Larsen and Toubro and Dr Sylendra Babu, IPS, Additional Director General of Police of the Coastal Security Group.
Awards for the winners of the SF by Sonata IIR 2015 were given away, as also those of the YAI Youth National Championship, that was conducted in parallel with this regatta. Apart from the medals, winners were awarded watches from the Ocean series of Sonata watches by the presenting sponsor of the event, Titan.
The Green Fleet of Optimists were the only ones who raced on the final day to play catch up on the 1 day of racing missed earlier. They had a fabulous day of racing on flat waters and 8 to 12 knot winds inside the harbour, and finished 3 races. They had the opportunity to see exactly what competitive racing is like with the Jury going out on water and flagging many of the kids for various n water infringements, something young sailors just starting off their sailing journey rarely get to experience in India. There were many learnings to be had and the little sailors came off much the better for the experience.
A total of 15 countries were represented, with 6 of them being Asian and a 152 sailors vying for medals across 6 classes of boats. 36 of these sailors were from abroad with the biggest contingent being from the UAE making this year's event by far the biggest in terms of the volume of foreign country participation. We thank our presenting sponsor Titan, Co-Sponsor L&T Construction and support sponsors Radiance Realty and Sheba Marine for making this possible. Titan Industries with the SF by Sonata Brand and L&T Construction have been our constant source of support for the past 3 years.
We look forward to welcoming many more sailors in the event next year as they head out to prepare for the next leg of the ASAF Youth Cup to be held in Hong Kong in February 2016. Indian sailors vying to hold on to their podium spots at the ASAF Youth Cup will be last year's winners Chitresh Thatha, Aniketh Rajaram and Naveen Kumanan, all from the TNSA.
