24-29 May 2016
It will be the city of Chioggia - also known as Little Venice - which will host one of the three major events of the 2016 ORC program. From the 24th to the 29th of May the Sportboat European Championship will take place, reserved for small boats with a length between 6 and 9 meters with a tonnage less than 2000kg. Boats with a series date before 2005 and complying with all requirements will be grandfathered when DLR is until 6. This grandfathering has been proposed by the organizing authority, and accepted by ORC on the logic that the Sportboat Rule was implemented in 2005, and before then a DLR limit of 6 was used for the Minialtura Class, very popular in Italy and especially in Chioggia.
The Notice of Race is now available on the official event website.
The continental championship will be organized by the Sailing Club Il Portodimare of Padua, which can boast of a forty year experience in the organization of important national and international events.
ORC president Bruno Finzi said, "The Sportboats represent for the ORC a pride and an important task, given the variety and numerosity of the fleet that races on the lakes and in the sea. The assignment of the Sportboat European Championship in 2016 will be a crucial opportunity for Italy to bring order in this sailing class. The European Championship of Chioggia will surely be a great ORC event, which I am sure will attract many European countries in Chioggia this year."
An excited GianFranco Frizzarin President of the association Il Portodimare said, "For our club this is the first time in organizing an event of continental calibre, after so many Italian championships will definitely be a good test. We are ready and we immediately went to action in order to create a strong team that between now and May will work hard for the success of the event."
The organizing committee has already published the online portal of the event, visible at www.orcsportboateuropeans2016.com, a Facebook page and a Twitter page, destined to become real multimedia containers for everything that will cover the event.
