Chris and Corky Rhodes lead
Father and son pair Chris and Corky Rhodes, sailing Footloose II lead the second leg of the Yachting Monthly Triangle Race from Kinsale, Ireland, to Treguier, France. Late on Saturday afternoon, the duo were almost due south of the Lizard and making 7.7 knots.
However, not far behind, and having taken a very similar track since the start, are the Australian father and son team of Mark and Walter Hipgrave in an almost identical boat, Mr Lucky, travelling at 8.1 knots.
These two boats also battled for line honours throughout the first leg of the race from Torquay to Kinsale, with the Rhodes family taking the honours, though beaten by the Australians on handicap.
The handicap winner of the first leg, Gary Heward and Russell Hawkins sailing Amylou, look well placed for a strong handicap performance. The pair from Marchwood Yacht Club in Southampton, sailing a Maxi 1100 are further west than the two leaders, but also a bit further south.
Also putting in a strong performance are James Moore and Philip Pryor sailing the Contessa 32 Katisha, who have worked their way well to the south of the rhumb line, and could soon benefit from a strong favourable tide.
Chris and Corky Rhodes represent Exe Sailing Club in Exmouth, Devon, while the Hipgrave family are from Australia's Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron.
The fleet are currently getting the benefit of 10 to 15 knots of westerly breeze, which is expect to hold through the night on Saturday, with the first boats expected to finish in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The second leg of the race started from Kinsale, Southern Ireland, at midday Thursday in 20 knots of northerly breeze.
The final leg of the race from Treguier back to Torquay will start at 17:00 on Wednesday 22nd June.
