Twenty-three youth and junior sailors competed in sparkling conditions at Ripon SC during the latest round of the 2018 North East Youth Travellers Series.
The fifth open meeting in the series - which has seen sunshine at many of its events so far - saw 21 boats entered, ranging from Oppies to Lasers and with more than a few RS Teras in between.
Event winners were Ellie Clark and Yusaf Hussein from the home club sailing a Mirror, who took an impressive three wins from the four races held. Second place overall went to the Laser 4.7 of Henry Redmond from Covenham SC, while club mate Harry Nickells in a Laser Radial worked hard to keep the PY difference open, with the slower boats never very far behind.
The prizes were presented by Barbara Darling, who was instrumental in getting the original NEYT series off the ground. There are 11 open meetings for the overall the series, and also prizes for competing in either the north or south zone.
RYA North East Region Volunteer Team Chair, Ian Smith, said: "This series is all about getting youth and junior sailors to travel around the region, competing in a series, making new friends and enjoying their sailing in a relaxed environment.
"Sixty helms have entered one or more events so far and with five events remaining before the final event and prize giving at Filey SC in July, there is still time to join in the series."
The series welcomes all abilities, from rookies to seasoned racers. It is designed to offer a competitive yet friendly racing environment, giving more experienced sailors a chance to test their skills, while at the same time including on-the-water coaching for those who need or want it to help them improve their boat speed, handling and results.
Next up in the series is Saturday 9th June at Pennine Sailing Club (South) and South Shields Sailing Club (North) - full details and all the results can be found on the event website at www.yhysa.org
Sailors are welcome to enter on the day but to support clubs with their planning it is helpful for would-be participants to register their interest in advance.
