Ullswater Yacht Club's first open event since 2019, the Daffodil Regatta is being held on Saturday and Sunday, May 22 & 23.
The event is traditionally the first one of the sailing season for the club and usually there are daffodils galore at the prize-giving as UYC joins in Ullswater's spring celebrations in praise of Wordsworth's favourite flower. This year the event has been postponed from its usual Aprll date.
Organisers can offer the usual excellent racing run by a top race team, sailing in beautiful surroundings, excellent hospitality and camping on site... but this year it will be too late for the new lambs on the fells and daffodils on the shore...
The racing is open to all classes and there will be separate starts for VX Ones, Musto Skiffs and Waszps and Moths. For the Musto Skiffs it is the first of the Scottish and Northern Skiff Series and the second event in the Hyde-sponsored Hyde Sails North South 2021 series in which a new Musto Skiff kite is up for grabs. Racing will be split into two fleets on a windward leeward course and a conventional course. All fleets will sail six races over the weekend - three on Saturday, start not before 1pm and three on Sunday, start not before 11am, with a briefing at 11am on the Saturday.
Entry to the event and booking for camping is through the UYC website under the Book Online tab. ullswateryachtclub.org/event/490851
Online entries close at midnight on Friday, May 21. Entries can be made at registration on the Saturday, subject to a £10 surcharge. Visitor numbers are restricted to 50.
"We are delighted to be able to welcome visiting racers back to the club after so long," said UYC Sailing Secretary Graham Donkin. "And a special welcome to the VXOne, Musto Skiff and Waszp/Moth classes who I know love to race here on our lovely lake. This year's Daffodil Regatta, despite the lack of daffodils, will be a very special event for us all, the start of a great year of racing at UYC."
He said that strict Covid-19 management procedures are in place at the club which all visitors must comply with. The event is subject to Government regulations in place at the time. All visitors are asked to view a UYC Covid-19 induction safety briefing below:
