Bassenthwaite Solo and Laser Open

Ten Solo and fifteen Laser sailors were greeted by fine summer weather and light winds which caused a slight delay to the start of race 1. The growing Bassenthwaite Solo fleet welcomed visitors from Derwent Reservoir.

In race one half the fleet were OCS and headed in for an early lunch! Local helms Robin Dawson and John Reekie won a race each, making for an exciting final race which Robin won in a freshening sea breeze. Tony King from Derwent Reservoir was 3rd overall, sailing consistently with two 3rd places.

The Laser fleet was made up of visitors from nine sailing clubs, including regional clubs Ripon and Derwent and Max Hunt from Whitstable, some 366 miles away! Tim Keighley from West Riding was first out of the blocks, winning race 1, were only 25 seconds separated the first 5 finishers.

Tim won race 2 and with it the event, with youth helm Thomas Bates from Ripon 2nd and grand master (and Bass Commodore) Jon Denwood in 3rd.

In race 3, the Lasers enjoyed the freshening sea breeze, with fast reaches and hard windward legs. Greg Liggins from Derwent won the final race, finishing 1 second ahead of Tim.

Grand master Max Hunt, sailing a Radial finished 3rd. Overall Tim won, counting 2 firsts and discarding a 2nd. Greg was a close 2nd counting a 1st and 2nd and Jon Denwood 3rd with a 3rd and a 4th.

The North West Junior Travellers (19/20 June) is the next open at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club.

NSSA National Youth Regatta overall
180 boats, all supervised by team managers with no parents staying on site The 2024 National School Sailing Association annual regatta was held at Bassenthwaite Sailing Club on 22-26 July.
