Ullswater Yacht Club is putting the 'VOOM' into an open weekend of racing especially for keelboats on October 9 & 10.
The VOOM Keelboat Weekend welcomes Tempests, Flying Fifteens, VXOnes and SB20s for a six-race two-day event. UYC has a long tradition of keelboat racing. Flying Fifteens were among the first boats sailed at the club when it was founded in 1958 and Tempests have been an established class since the 1960s. Today the VXOne class at the club is thriving and it is one of the biggest fleets in the country.
The Keelboat Weekend is sponsored by VOOM Sports Nutrition, a Lake District company whose CEO is long-time UYC Tempest sailor Robin Higgens. His aim is for the weekend to be a celebration of keelboat racing on Ullswater. As well as two days of competition there will be special catering all weekend with a barbecue on Friday night, an evening meal of Cumbrian Beef and Vegetarian Stew with local produce and entertainment from a live four-piece band on Saturday and breakfasts on Saturday and Sunday morning. And the sponsors are providing extra fun prizes at the prize-giving after the racing.
"Ullswater is just a perfect place to race keelboats offering the potential for big windward/leeward courses. At VOOM we are delighted to sponsor the event which will showcase what a great venue UYC is. We want all our visitors, and members, to have a great time on and off the water over the weekend," said Robin.
Registration will be in the clubhouse on Saturday from 9am to 10.30am and a competitors' briefing will be held at 11am. A maximum of 6 races will be sailed over the weekend with the earliest start of 1pm on Saturday, October 9. The earliest start for races on Sunday will be 10.30am.
Booking for the event, camping/campervans on site and the Friday and Saturday evening meals is on the UYC website, ullswateryachtclub.org/event/522585
