Gusty conditions for the fourth Junior Winter Race Training at Starcross Yacht Club on Saturday 5th February. A strong contingent of nearly 20 boats focussed on start line techniques, line bias, and profiting from wind shifts.
With the sun and some blue sky making an occasional appearance, the sailors (mostly in Teras and Toppers) were split into two groups based on their racing experience. After a theory session ashore, both groups spent a full morning on the water working on starts and the first beat. The conditions were gusty, with shifty wind - which helped put into practice the theory of profiting from the shifts upwind. After a warming lunch ashore, young sailors were back afloat for more sailing in the afternoon.
The last session was ashore, debriefing with the use of video recordings from the day's action on the water.
Particular thanks to all of the coaches, as well as the parent helpers on shore and on the water, and to SYC for hosting.
The next session is on the 19th February, and further training opportunities are listed at www.starcrossyc.org.uk
