Pete Goss, skipper of giant catamaran Team Philips, today announced Richard Tudor as the new member of his crew.
The 41 year old professional sailor from North Wales is noted for his seamanship. A natural sailor he began competitive racing at the age of eight on a Mirror Dinghy and has lived on the water for most of his life since.
"He was the natural choice having all of the skills that we were looking for. He is also well known to the crew and will fit in immediately. We are delighted that he has agreed to join us for the RACE." Said Goss.
The experienced sailor has completed two circumnavigations of the globe. First as skipper of
British Steel II in the 1992-3 British Steel Challenge - he was dismasted in the Southern Ocean and managed to spend a month at sea bringing his crew to safety in Tasmania. The second was as skipper of Nuclear Electric in the 1996-7 BT Global Challenge. He has competed in most national events and has considerable multihull experience winning the 1999 Three Peaks Yacht Race, where he broke the record by five hours.
Originally a sail maker with his own business for 15 years, Richard's offshore experience has led him to complete eight transatlantic crossings and two races around the world. He has sailed at both extremes of the planet from 80 degrees North (above Spitzbergen) down to 60 degrees South.
His other hobbies include skiing, rugby, golf and he is a volunteer with the RNLI as a crew member. He is commodore of his local yacht club and speaks fluent Welsh.
"What an honour and a thrill to join this crew. I have always been close to Team Philips helping out where I can and now to be an official part of the team is fantastic. I can't wait to get stuck in." said Tudor.
Richard has been sailing with the crew during their latest sea trials on Team Philips and will be a full time member during their 2,500 mile qualifier for The RACE, a no rules, no limits race around the world starting on 31st December 2000 from Barcelona, Spain. His specific responsibility on Team Philips is for general maintenance of the yacht.
