Round 1 of the YachtsandYachting.com Race Series, organised by Prometheus Sailing, was held over the weekend of 16th and 17th March.
A full programme of seven Windward/Leeward and Round the Cans races were sailed in the Eastern Solent in the one design Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410 yachts, chartered from Prometheus, one team even travelling from Zurich for the event.
Day 1 races enjoyed a steady F2 breeze although direction was a little unstable shifting between South Easterly and Southerly. Hyde Sails (Clemens Mieth, Imperial College Business School), emerged the leader at the end of the day with 3 wins and a second place.
YachtMarket.com (Simon Hadley, HSBC), had a retirement in Race 1 and were unlucky not to win Race 2 having been leading for most of the race.
Magenta Project (skippered by James Ainsworth) won a shortened Race 4 from a rapidly closing Hyde Sails.
Day 2 saw three Round the Cans races in a South Westerly F3-4. Yachtmarket again led Race 5 but misjudged the final cross tide leg and that allowed Hyde Sails to take their fourth win.
A wind shift and general misjudgement of the tide for the start of Race 6 saw Magenta Project win the start and hold onto win, holding off Hyde Sails who were closing rapidly on the final leg as Magenta Project struggled with a spinnaker setting problem.
The crew on BVI's (Luke Vitek, University of Cambridge) had been improving all weekend and their efforts paid off in Race 7, winning the start and finishing the final race of the weekend with a comfortable lead over the consistent Hyde Sails.
Round 2 of the series is scheduled for 13th and 14th April, with further rounds throughout the year. For more information on the 2024 YachtsandYachting.com Racing Series and how you can charter or any charters, please contact Terry Hunt at
