The weekend of 13th & 14th April saw 8 one design Sunsail 41.0's take to the water for Round 2 of the YachtsandYachting.com Race Series, organised by Prometheus Sailing.
Due to lack of wind early on day 2, just 6 of the 7 programmed races could be run, with a mixture of Windward/Leeward and Round the Cans courses.
Day 1 saw a dull overcast morning in the Eastern Solent, initially with a Force 3 breeze but with some significant shifts. Race 1 saw the returning team from Zurich (Grant Gillon - Zurich International Sailing Club) on Magenta Project reading the tide and wind shift to take a port hand start at the pin end, a lead they held for 2 legs of the triangle/sausage course until hunted down by Mark Oaten (National Grid) on Hyde Sails. Magenta Project held on to second from a fast closing Sunsail Helios, (Bill Taylor / CSORC).
Race 2, a windward/leeward course saw Hyde Sails winning again but with Marlow Ropes (Steve Sudlow / National Grid) in close company. Race 3 saw another winner in Sunsail Helios followed by Scott Atkinson (National Grid) on British Virgin Islands. Race 4 was another Round the Cans race with BVI's winning from Chris Rees (ReesLeisure) onboard Southampton Sailing Week. At the end of Day 1, counting all 4 results, a consistent Marlow Ropes led by 1 point from BVI.:
Day 2 started with high pressure killing the breeze until after midday, when a sailable South Westerly became established. Race 5 was a Windward/Leeward course shortened after 1 round to allow time for another race. Hyde Sails again took the gun closely followed by Marlow Ropes with BVI's in third. The Round the Cans Race 6 produced a photo finish with Hyde Sails just finishing ahead of a fast charging Marlow Ropes with BVI's third again.
Despite four wins Hyde Sails had to count a DNC which left Marlow Ropes and BVI equal on points. On countback the event was won by BVI (Scott Atkinson / National Grid) with Marlow Ropes (Steve Sudlow) / National Grid) 2nd and Hyde Sails (Mark Oaten / National Grid) third. Congratulations to the top two as they now qualify for Novembers final.
