Chase Sailing Club Wednesday Series 2024 - Weeks 1 & 2

by Dave Watkins 25 Apr 14:05 BST 17 & 24 April 2024

20 club members signed on for the Wednesday night series over the last two weeks. The series kicked off on the 17th of April and will run through till September. The format is as per previous years with a 60min pursuit being the order of the day!

The fleet is a diverse one with many different classes and close racing throughout the series.

The first week started in light airs with a cold northerly wind, Isobel Tate took the OOD duties for the first week, setting a long course, with the beat set and the competitors set off, excited for the first race of the season. Surely there would be some rusty helms out there? it appeared that it was the GP fleet that were a little too eager to get going, all OCS.

Only one boat went back which meant that last year's winners, Neil Davies and Michelle Evans were deemed OCS along with Cal Anderson and Chris Anderson also sailing a GP.

Much debate was had in the bar after the racing with the friendly banter continuing whilst a beer and sausage roll was enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Sam Coxon in his Phantom, fresh from the Bowmoor Phantom open (4th) showing his excellent pace to take the win!

The second week was much the same for the wind direction but more easterly and strength F2, Fin Watson took control of this race setting a beat into the clubhouse. The competitors took a little time to get over the other side of the lake to start, but all got away without a drama this week. Unfortunately, the wind swung around slightly which meant that after the first beat it became one of those races where competitors were looking for the shifts to find the advantage.

It was last weeks OD Isobel Tate and Peter Tate in their Graduate who spotted the pressure on the right-hand side and got out in front. Ken Collins in his Laser following got into second with the others following. The fast boats started to chase but there wasn't enough wind and the Graduate held on to the excellent win!

A great start to the season, Chase Sailing Club are looking forward to another successful year, hosting some exciting events in 2024! Including the Polar Chase part of the Seldon Sail Juice Winter Series.

All we need now is some warmer conditions and the BBQ!
