The 2024-2025 Cascais J70 Winter Series has just started, doubling as the Portuguese National Championship, concluded today with a decisive victory for Portuguese sailors.
The three-day regatta, hosted by the Clube Naval de Cascais from October 11th to 13th, featured sixteen J70s from, Portugal, Spain, Great Britan, Brazil and Netherlands, five nations competing in challenging yet fair conditions. Winds ranged from 6 to 12 knots, consistently blowing from East to South East. The fleet completed the full schedule, sailing all nine races as planned.
The overall results underscored the exceptional performance of Portuguese teams. First place overall went to the 2023 J70 European Champion Solyd Property Developers, helmed by Vasco Serpa, with Afonso Domingos, Paulo Manso, and Gonçalo Lopes. In a dramatic end to the event the winners started the last day in fourth place and overcame a 12 point deficit in the day and only secured the Portuguese title when they climbed 9 positions in a fading breeze in the last upwind of the last race. Second place was for brits XCELLENT, skippered by John Pollard, with Jack and Henry Wetherell, and Oscar Cawthorne. Rounding out the top three was northern Portuguese team Another Affair, skippered by Tiago Morais, with Miguel Oliveira, Francisco Oliveira, and João Oliveira.
The first Corinthian was the Galician boat Abril Verde, skippered by Luis Perez Canal, Cesar Torné Vasquez, Pablo Espinosa, Juan de Comingues Carvalho and Luis da Rocha Rial a testament to the strong performance within this class.
The championship received generous support from several sponsors, including the Cascais Municipality, Turismo de Cascais, Vista Alegre, Sagres, Marina de Cascais, and SailCascais. Their contributions were instrumental in the success of this prestigious event.
The regatta showcased intense competition and excellent sailing skills. The final standings demonstrate the consistence on the Cascais local fleet, particularly in the overall standings, while international competitors provided strong challenges. The event was a resounding success, showcasing both the competitive spirit of the J70 class and the beauty of the Cascais coastline.
