The annual "mega-regatta" hosted by over a dozen sailing and yacht clubs across southern California, the Southern California Yachting Association Midwinters, took place last weekend for many keelboat classes. California YC in Marina del Rey hosted the J/70 fleet.
The eight-boat J/70 class saw very spirited racing at the top of the leaderboard. "Trading paint" like those NASCAR stock car racers in last weekend's Daytona 500 were Jeff Janov's NIMBUS from the host Cal YC and Ryan Cox's DJ from Ventura YC. Both teams know each other all too well and both shared taking most of the podium results after four races. Janov's NIMBUS got the better of his good friends on Cox's DJ, posting a 1-2-2-1 for 6 pts total. The DJ boys were singing the blues, having to live with a 3-1-1-2 for 7 pts to garner the silver medal! Rounding out the podium was another veteran of the SoCal one-design wars, Curt Johnson's AVET 2.01 took the bronze medal on a tie-breaker with a 2-6-5-4 tally for 17 pts.
Rounding out the top five was Kim Kundrak's JOY RIDE, losing that tie-breaker to take fourth place on countback. Then, settling for fifth place was Steve Wyman's BOONDOGGLE with a 7-7-7-3 record for 24 pts (also determined by a 3-way tiebreaker!).
