Behind the scenes of Hot Lab's design of the new 35m AES superyacht Mereley I

by Viken Group 5 Mar 14:10 GMT

Hot Lab, a part of the Viken Group, has revealed further details of its design for the new 35m custom AES Yacht superyacht, Mereley I. The Milan-based studio is responsible for both the yacht's exterior and interior design.

A fully-custom superyacht now ready for an owner, Mereley I is positioned between a modern explorer and a sportier yacht, presenting a solid and masculine yet elegant profile. As Hot Lab co-founder and design director, Enrico Lumini explains: "Her volumes clearly reference the tradition of expedition vessels, yet at the same time have a more dynamic and sporty spirit. We wanted to give a sleeker look to a classic explorer."

Built to RINA classification with a semi-displacement steel hull, robust aluminium superstructure and transatlantic range of 3,800nm at 11.5 knots, Mereley I is sure to turn heads on the water thanks to her striking blue hull and distinctive red waterline stripes. These are a nod to both motorsports and the association of the colour red with sportiness and speed, according to her designers.

Contrast is key

Stepping inside, the colour palette of Mereley I is decidedly 'masculine'. Full of contrasts and without using any pastel tones or excessive saturation, Hot Lab worked with a broad range of dark, warm greys, blacks and natural sand and linen tones which create a strong and bold, yet refined and elegant environment akin to a metropolitan apartment.

Attention to detail is paramount and displays the exceptional craftsmanship of her builders. This is evident from the magnificent fine carving and finishing of her wood, from the teak ceilings in the exterior areas, to the intricate detailing of the outdoor tables, handrails and headboards found in the master and VIP cabins.

The sumptuously appointed full-beam owner's suite is located at the bow of the main deck and comes complete with a central king-sized bed, office space, walk-in-wardrobe and forward ensuite. It is fitted with extensive glazing, meaning that its dark hard woods and marble detailed ceiling are bathed in natural light. Up to 12 guests are accommodated on board, with two additional VIP and two twin ensuite cabins found amidships on the lower deck.

Key materials harnessed on board include oak, as well as numerous lacquered finishes and resins. In addition, as a truly distinctive feature, Hot Lab's clever use of 3D-textured surfaces give the environment a highly personalised character. As Lumini details: "We wanted the interiors to feature many reflections - partly to trick the eye and partly to bring the bluish hues of the sea into the spaces."

Bringing the outside in

Indeed, this element of her design works in beautiful harmony with Mereley I's large windows, which are "pure and simple rectangular shapes" characteristic of explorer yachts - according to Lumini - and which blend in perfectly with the clean, stretched lines of both her exterior and interior. Notably too, she also features intricately designed, open bulwarks to facilitate breathtaking views.

Her spacious and versatile skylounge is the perfect location for enjoying yet more natural light, thanks to its floor-to-ceiling windows offering phenomenal views from the bar and lounge area, with sliding glass doors providing direct access to another dining area from the deck. The airy and bright main deck saloon offers an alternative lounging space complete with L-shaped sofa and dining table for up to 10 guests.

Size: Perfectly optimised for enjoyment

Nicknamed the "pocket explorer", Mereley I packs numerous interesting and contemporary design features into her 35 metres, including her incredible stern beach club. Topped by two stunning skylights, it includes a large integrated multi-functional swimming platform which accommodates a generous tender. Other standout areas include her large sundeck jacuzzi and dedicated technical space for jet skis on the upper deck.

"Our goal was to design a striking, modern explorer yacht with expansive windows, open bulwarks, and a spacious layout. We prioritized a strong connection to the sea with a large swimming platform, beach club, and an airy sundeck, and the Hot Lab team executed everything to perfection," said Erdem Biçer, shipyard manager and partner at the Turkish yard. "Mereley I is perfect for owners who value luxury, comfort, and versatile indoor-outdoor living, offering ample space for relaxation and socializing, even with large groups."

Mereley I is now listed for sale. "More than just a yacht, Mereley I is a statement of ambition, sophistication, and the pursuit of adventure," commented Deniz Kaymaz, yacht broker at Northrop & Johnson, the central agency for the superyacht. "She embodies the perfect balance of strength and elegance, designed for those who refuse to compromise on either. Crafted with precision and vision, this yacht isn't just about reaching destinations; she's about redefining the journey."

A dream collaboration

With Mereley I serving as just the latest example, Hot Lab is a long-term partner of AES Yacht. Erdem Biçer has nothing but praise for the studio. "Their design approach considers not only aesthetics but also the yacht's intended use and production process, which greatly facilitates the shipyard's work. This makes collaborating with them a truly enjoyable experience. In turn, we strive to push the boundaries of production where necessary to ensure maximum adherence to the design."

Indeed, Antonio Romano, commercial and marketing director of the Viken Group and co-founder of Hot Lab, predicts a bright future for Mereley I as a result of this partnership. "Mereley I is a perfect example of how it is possible to build a magnificent yacht from scratch in Turkey, featuring cutting-edge characteristics and top-tier aesthetic and technical finishes. Mereley I boasts spacious outdoor areas, a highly recognizable style (a key factor in this region), and excellent finishes. I am confident that it will be successful in the charter market and soon make an owner very happy. I'm also extremely proud, on behalf of Hot Lab and AES Yacht, to see such a high-quality, head-turning design on the first yacht project delivered together."

Due to Mereley I's glowing reception in the industry, AES Yacht is now planning the production of the second hull and is already working with Hot Lab on a 40-metre version from the same line, with details set to be revealed later this year.
