2025 Tumlaren State Titles: 88 years of Tumlaren One Design yacht racing on Port Phillip

by Peter Costolloe 24 Mar 09:29 GMT 29-30 March 2025

This weekend, 29th and 30th March 2025, the 2025 Tumlaren State Titles, will showcase one design racing that has survived and thrived over 88 years of weather tantrums thrown up by Melbourne's Port Phillip.

Since 1937 the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron has organised and conducted Tumlaren one design racing. In 2025 the RMYS pulling out all it's support stops, both on water and social, to ensure the tradition continues.

All the cracks gathering to the fray could best describe the make up of the Skippers and crews competing for both one design and corrected time glory.

The Tumlaren fleet for 2025 is all set to race over courses that will put all skippers and crews to the test on both tactics and sail trimming skills. Yvonne, the all-time champion and recently fully restored Tumlaren, now under the helm Dave Allen, will be there. There's a fleet of Tumlaren thoroughbred's with pedigree's as long as your arm all set to take her on. Across the fleet, tried and tested Port Phillip crews will be up and at it against crews from NSW, Tas and NZedr's.

The story of Tumlaren based trophy silverware reflects the longevity the fleet at RMYS. From the inception Knud Reimer trophy and the T.L. Banks trophy, which graces the foyer of the RMYS, through to the Southern Woodenboat Sailing news team (SWS) donated $250.00 sailing jackets. The 2025 Titles series will have all the fleet in the swim to sustain the RMYS support of their Tumlaren fleet traditions.

All Tumlaren skippers are presented with their Series boat identification flag at Oberwyl, the traditional Friday reception location Special trophy winners receive a take home flag to commemorate their win.
