Bermuda International Invitational Race Week Sponsored by Bacardi Rum
Sailors in Bermuda International Invitational Race Week sponsored by Bacardi took a day off from racing Wednesday after Tuesday afternoon races were cancelled when the wind totally disappeared. Wednesday had been designated as a 'spare' day. The forecast predicted winds under 5 knots, so the committee decided to wait until Thursday to continue racing.
Keelboat: Course Alpha
Bruce Dyson (Marblehead MA) won the five-race "A" Series on the IOD's Tuesday, coming second in the shortened light air race. Dyson sailed the series with a 4,5,1,3,2 and dropped the 5. The International One Designs continue racing in their "B" series and in the overall Race Week class series for the Vrengen Gold Cup. Dyson and Jenkins are in 1st and 2nd for the 9-race series.
In the Etchells Class, Bermudian Peter Bromby, now with scores of 4,1,1 continues to set the pace. He showed the speed and smart sailing that brought him the championship in the Star Class earlier this year. John Kenerson 5,3,2(Virginia Beach VA) is in 2nd and Andreas Lewin(Bermuda) dropped back into 3rd when he failed to finish within the time limit on Tuesday.
Last year's J-24 Class champion, Sean McDermott now 5,1,4,1,1 (Halifax NS) continues to lead the class. Following in 2nd in cumulative total is Don Wagoner 2,5,2,3,2 (Phoenixville PA) and in 3rd is Stuart Jardine 3,6,1,6,3(Milford-on-Sea, Hants, UK).
Dinghy: Course Bravo
On course Bravo, Bermudians dominate the dinghy classes. Ali Miller 1,1(Annapolis MD) is the exception taking two bullets as the 505s got in justtwo races. Chuck Millican 2,2, (Bermuda) is 2nd and James McDonald 3,4(Bermuda) and Doug DeCouto 4,3 (Bermuda) are tied for 3rd.
In the Sunfish, Malcolm Smith 1,1,1 (Bermuda) has a sweep going in the class with three bullets. And just behind him in 2nd is Donnie Martinborough 2,2,2(Nassau) with three duces. They were followed by Martin Vezina3,3,3,and Jim Stuart 4,6,4.
Action in the Laser class is a family affair with Brett Wright 1,1,2 (Bermuda) getting tough competition from his wife Sara Lane Wright 12,2,1. Sara missed Sunday's competition because she was travelling back from a regatta in France. Todd Olson is 2nd, Ted Wood 3rd and Sara Lane Wright is 4th.
Snipe class leader with three bullets is Stevie Dickinson 1,1,1 (Bermuda),2nd is Ian Brown (CAN), 3rd is Bill Welch (St. Petersburg FL) and 4th was Chris Hains (Oakville ONT).
Racing continues Thursday and Friday with two races scheduled in each class each day. The forecast is for better winds east-northeasterly 10-15 increasing to 15-20 knots.
