Four points separate top three in IOD's
Stay tuned for a photo finish in the IOD class in Bacardi's Bermuda International Invitational Race Week. With two possible throw-outs in the series and with only 4 points separating the top three boats, it all comes down to the final two races tomorrow. Courtenay Jenkins (Owens Mills MD), Bruce Dyson (Marblehead MA) and Charlie Van Voorhis (Mattapoisett MA) continue to battle for the Vrengen Gold Cup in the IOD Class. Jenkins is now back in the lead in total points after posting a 3,4 against Dyson's 8,3 today. Van Voorhis took a 1st and 5th today and is only one point back. Sailing in the class is so close that only Jan Petter Roed (Norway) has won two races in the series. He got off to a slow start, but looks good in the hunt for the "B" series prize.
Three protests, in close racing Thursday, marred the otherwise perfect day in Etchells racing. Peter Bromby and John Kenerson had a confrontation at the finish line pin involving overlaps and contact with the mark. The jury ruled they were both DSQ. They were finishing 1st and 2nd and their demise left Tim Patton in first and This Tim Patton in 1st and Andreas Lewin in 2nd. Bromby also won race 5 followed by Tim Lynch. With one race remaining in the series and a throwout Bromby is still in position to win the Etchells Class.
The ranking in the J-24 class stayed the same after two races Thursday. Sean McDermott (Halifax NS) continued his romp through the series taking a 2nd and a 1st today. In Race 6, his start was at the committee end and a little off timing. He was forced to the right immediately when left was favored. On the second beat, he came back from 5th to finish a close 2nd to Don Wagoner (Phoenixville PA). In Race 7, McDermott popped out of a traffic jam at the pin end got away to the left with good pace and led all five legs to the finish. Don Wagoner is still in 2nd and 3rd is Stuart Jardine (Milford-on-Sea, Hants, UK).
On course Bravo racing was excellent and the 12 -14 knot northeasterly made the little boats fly. Brett Wright actually came in 2nd and 3rd instead of 1st today. In the series, he still leads Tod Olson, who got two bullets today.
In the 505's Ali Miller came 1st today and has a perfect score of 4 bulletts. He is still followed by Chuck Millican and Doug De Couto.
Stevie Dickinson couldn't maintain his string of bullets as he came 2nd in Race 5 today. Ian Brown came 1st in that race and Dickinson was 2nd. Bill Welch is in 3rd.
Malcolm Smith and Donnie Martinborough traded 1st and 2nd today. Smith still leads the class over Martinborough. Martin Vezina is in 3rd.
