505 Nationals at Mounts Bay Sailing Club Overall

by Simon Lake 1 Sep 2002 16:06 BST

Race 8

Most of the fleet start late and went right, Thoralf Greger and Simon Lake started early and went left, Ian Pinnell and Steve Hunt went up the middle, mainly to cover their closest rivals the French Team of Boite and Briffoteaux. At the windward mark Pinnell & Hunt led from Stuart Turnball and Jason Lunn and Greger and Lake.

On the first run Dave Smithwhite and Paul Young moved into third place and the places then remained unchanged to the finish.

Race 9

The whole fleet went right (towards Penzance) up the first beat, the early leaders were Boite and Briffoteaux but at the windward mark Pinnell & Hunt led from Boite and Briffoteaux followed by Greger & Lake. On the first run Boite and Briffoteaux were the first to spot the leeward mark and gybed early into the lead, Pinnell & Hunt recovered to second and Andy Williams & Andy Edmonds pulled through four boats to take third followed by Greger & Lake and Smithwhite and Young.

Boite and Briffoteaux maintained their lead until the final beat when Pinnell & Hunt got inside them at the leeward mark and sailed over them to take the lead which they held to the finish. On the final run Smithwhite and Young passed Williams and Edmonds to take third and Turnball and Lunn pipped Greger and Lake on the finishing line to take fifth.

Overall:

Pinnell and Hunt had a comfortable victory in the end from the French Team of Boite and Briffoteaux. Having sailed 9 races the second discard came into play, allowing Smithwhite and Young to recover from their contretemps with the committee boat on day 2, and take third overall.

Racing in the Classic Fleet (boats built by Parker or Rondar pre 8400 with the smaller spinnaker) was tight all the way to the finish with Ian Hotchkiss and A Black from Clevedon SC taking the Derek Farrant Trophy from Laurence and Charles Milton who had travelled all the way down from Helensburgh SC on the Clyde.

The Bainbridge Team Trophy was retained by the team from Hayling Island SC with 14 points from the team from Burton SC with 15 points.

Making her return to the fleet after two years Debbie Jarvis from Grafham Water SC finished 7th overall to take the Hyde Sails Trophy for the first lady competitor. Terry Selfe and Alan Montague from Stone SC took the Salty Yacht Trophy for the highest placed boat with the combined age of Helm, Crew and boat over 100 years.
