Edinburgh yachtsman Willy Barr came from behind to snatch the Class Five event in yesterday's (FRI) final day of BP-sponsored East Coast Sailing Week. His last-gasp charge in the seven race event in the River Forth of Granton allowed him to take the overall prize in his class with Firecrest.
Barr of Granton-based Forth Corinthian Yacht Club mastered the fierce south-west wind of up to 30 knots around the three mile course off Granton. The popular helmsman, who has one of the smallest boats, was fourth overnight after earning another first place plus two seconds, one third and one fifth in the six-day regatta featuring around 70 boats.
Local chandler Jock Blair from Port Edgar secured the Class One event despite coming fourth on the final day. He proved his consistency with Robo by collecting three firsts, a second, a third and two fourths in the event.
John Murphy, chairman of East Coast Sailing Week, who races out of Port Edgar, was second overall in Alouette to add to his first place in the recent Banff to Stavanger event, and third was Absolutely 2 skippered by Ken Kelly of Port Edgar.
The Class Two winner was Simon Howell's Jezebel from Port Edgar with Class Three going to Robin Brownlie with Hopscotch from Royal Forth.
The clear winner in the Sports Boats was Colin Davidson with Buddy while the fast cruiser award went to Danna helmed by Robert Watson of Royal Tay. Naiad won Class Seven skippered by Andy Linton of Burntisland.
