Bigamist back in first position
The Portuguese team on Bigamist today regained the lead that they gave away yesterday. The boat helmed by Afonso Domingos added a second and a third position, enough to overhaul Noticia IV, which is now two points behind. Third, and tied at 18 points with the Spanish team is the Chilean Mitsubishi team of Horacio Pavez, winner of the second race of the day. The UON team of José Caldeira won the first race, but remains fifth.
Afonso Domingos from Bigamist said, "Today was very different from what is usually a normal day in the Copa del Rey MAPFRE because we sailed closer to the club and the harbour because there were unusual wind conditions. With these wind difficulties, teamwork is much more demanding, especially with poor wind and waves ahead. The communication between the trimmers was essential today.
"We made a first start, that was annulled by the committee, and an hour later we started again really well, being second in the fist leg. In the second race we were third. The overall result of the day was great because we started seconds and now we have returned to the first position overall.
The most important thing for the Bigamist crew is reaching the end of the day knowing that we have done well and we are rising up the leaderboard. We will try every day to keep that position until the end."
The 34th Copa del Rey MAPFRE is organized by the Real Club Nautico de Palma and is held until Saturday, August 8th.
