Fox's Marine & Country: Keep Warm Afloat
by Tom Stewart, Fox's Marine & Country 28 Apr 2016 15:39 BST
28 April 2016
KEEPING YOUR KIDS WARM AFLOAT
The dinghy sailing season is up and running for both club racers and beginners. Whilst the air temperature is rising, the water temperature remains cool, averaging just 10 degrees in May. So if your children are on a sailing course or just messing about in boats it is worth making sure they have the right kit to keep them warm.
WETSUITS- LONG OR SHORT?
Kids love shorties but at this time of year we recommend a full-length wetsuit. A full-length suit obviously insulates the arms and legs but it also reduces the flush through of cold water that you get with a Shortie. With a full-length suit children will spend longer sailing and playing. These
Gul G-Force wetsuits
feature titanium-lined neoprene for extra warmth and, costing just £32.50, are a really great value choice for anyone just starting out in watersports.
RASH VESTS AND SHORTS
For added comfort add a
Rash Vest
. The slippery surface allows freer movement and reduces any chafe. All our rash vests offer the important benefit of 100% UV protection.
LAYER UP UNDERNEATH
It’s a great idea to add layers underneath a wetsuit to add to your overall warmth. The
Gill Hydrophobic top
was specifically designed for this. As the name suggests the polypropylene fabric repels the water, helping to keep a snug layer of warmth next to the body.
BOOTS
If your child is dinghy sailing then they will definitely get wet feet. Trainers might do for a taster session, but sitting in a dinghy for a few hours with cold feet won’t encourage a love of watersports!
Our
Gul 5mm Neoprene boots
are the perfect all-rounders and will help the water that does get in to warm up. Special Offer - now just £24.00 (RRP £30.00)
SPRAY TOPS
Spray Tops
keep the wind and spray off preventing heat loss by evaporation. Every experienced dinghy sailor wears a spray top, which is a good clue as to how effective they are. On hot days they might get stuffed into a grab bag but as soon as the spray hits or the rain falls you are going to need one!
