The 34th Medemblik Regatta has been sailed from 22 to 26 May 2018. Sailors were confronted with difficult conditions, but the sun made up for it. All races have been sailed and competitions got really close this week. The medal race in boundaries made the races exciting to watch!
It has been a fantastic week for sailors and organization. Joost Brouwer, spokesman of the Medemblik Regatta: "There's one thing you can't plan, that's the weather. We've had some difficult wind conditions this week, but the race committees managed to get all races sailed. We're really happy with the week we've had, the sunny conditions may be made up for the shifty winds."
Spanish Echavarri Erasun and Pacheco van Rijnsoever win Nacra 17
For the top 3 it was an exciting race. The Spanish duo Fernando Echavarri Erasun with Tara Pacheco van Rijnsoever headed into the medal race leading the fleet. Finishing fourth in the medal race they just secured their golden medal for this Medemblik Regatta. "It's been a fantastic race. We are very happy, and the theatre style racing was good. It was the first time we raced like this with the Nacra 17." Second place is for Gemma Jones and Jason Saunders (NZL) and third place for British John Gimson and Anna Burnet.
First win in senior fleet for 49er sailors Rual and Amoros
In the 49er the top 4 where battling for a medal, the French Lucas Rual and Amile Amoros started the medal race leading and ensured of a podium spot. With their second place finish in the medal race, the gold is theirs: "We've had an awesome regatta. Improved a lot on our technic and speed, so it has been a good regatta for us. And it's been our first win in the senior fleet." Australian duo David Gilmour and Joel Turner race a very strong medal race, finishing first and securing a silver medal. Third place in the 49er is for the Argentinian brothers Lange.
British duo claims gold at in 49erFX
It's very close between the top 3 in the 49erFX, Dutch Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz start the medal race in a leading position. But the British Charlotte Dobson and Saskia Tidey race a strong race and make sure to finish in first place. With Bekkering and Duetz finishing in third, they lose their golden medal to the British. "We've had some really tricky conditions this week, we are happy to have raced such a good medal race. This regatta was a great opportunity to race against the Dutch girls and other strong international competitors."
Fabien Pianazza unbeatable in RS:X U19
In the RS:X U19 first and second place were already claimed by the French Fabien Pianazza and Tom Garandeau. Pianazza has a solid week winning almost every race. No surprise he wins the medal race as well and securing his golden medal. "I'm really happy, it was my first regatta here in Medemblik. Next up is the Youth World Championship in Texas." Garandeau grabs the silver medal at the Medemblik Regatta and third place is for the Dutch Jim van Someren.
Zofia Noceti Klepacka wins RS:X Women
In the RS:X Women class, the Polish Zofia Noceti Klepacka was on track for the podium all week. Finishing in 6th place in the medal race, she easily secures her golden medal. "We've had hard conditions this week. Normally, Medemblik is a windy place, it's the first time in many years I see light winds here. It was a hard competition, happy to have won this week." Dutch Lilian de Geus had to finish in front to secure a podium place. She finishes the medal race in first place and grabs the silver medal. Third is Russian Stefania Elfutina.
RS:X Men podium places switched at medal race
Maciej Kluszczynski was on course for gold most part of the week. In the medal race he couldn't perform like he did the past week. Finishing in 8th place, he has to give up his golden medal to Yoav Cohen (ISR), who sailed a really strong medal race. "I've given everything!" An enthusiastic Cohen shouts when he arrives at his coach. He has sailed a super strong medal race, coming in second after Kiran Badloe. "It was a crazy battle this week. But hard work pays of!" The silver medal is for Kluszczynski and British Kieran Holmes-Martin finished the week in third place.
Steady week gives Elliot Hanson a golden medal
British Elliot Hanson was already secured for the gold. "It's great, first time back into the boat and coming with a win here is an awesome feeling. Looking forward to go back into racing in the other regattas." Dutch Yuri Hummel started his week strong, after a few difficult days he managed to secure a second place a day before the medal race. With a sixth place he secures his second place overall. Swiss Eliot Merceron ends the regatta in third place.
Daphne van der Vaart forced herself to win in Laser Radial
For the Laser Radial it was still very close when they started the medal races. Racing close within the boundaries, Dutch Daphne van der Vaart grabs the leading position at the start and keeps it all the way till the finish. "It's always good to win an event", says van der Vaart. "The top girls were missing, but Maxime Jonker is always a tough competitor for me. I forced myself to win this regatta and am happy to claim this victory." Her teammate Maxime Jonker claims the silver medal and Croatian Elena Vorobeva finishes the week in third place.
