The fourth of this Trident-UK supported series was held at Newbiggin by the Sea SC on Sat July 1st.
There was little wind to begin with so Peter Chambers, the RO decided to postpone for thirty minutes in the hope that the sea breeze would come in. It did in a gentle way so a short race was started.
Peter Logg, South Shields SC in a Radial was in fine form and played the fickle breeze to advantage and finished well ahead. Toppers sailed by Michael Matthews Sunderland YC, Tom Steavenson Tynemouth SC and Joe Newton SSSC were in hot pursuit and finished in that order.
Early lunch was declared with the expectation that the sea breeze would strengthen as the tide turned.
The second race again showed Logg to be in winning form and clinching the series with Steavenson getting ahead of Matthews and Chris Elliott and Alex Forth both in Toppers from SSSC giving them a worrying time. Andrew Llewellyn, Pico, Castlegate Quay, sailed extremely well to come in sixth. Newbiggin sailors Lorraine Banks and Aiden Dyne in Toppers were showing improvement in their boat handling skills all the way round.
The third race saw even more sea breeze and an awkward lumpy sea develop as the tidal current picked up speed. This did not deter the young sailors. Logg flew around the course with Steavenson and Matthews changing places and the SSSC Toppers of Kathryn Gill and Forth well placed just behind them. Iain Symon had a stronger race even though at age ten he was by far the youngest.
Pico sailors Aaron Lagan, Inner City, Luke Troath and Oliver Craven CQ were having some good racing and enjoying the stronger breeze.
