250 days until the 2020 Zhik 29er World Championships

by Claire Mueller 7 Dec 2019 11:49 GMT 13-21 August 2020

With just 250 days to go until the 2020 Zhik 29er World Championships, the UK 29er Class is delighted to be welcoming the 29er Worlds back to the UK for the 3rd time since the event's inauguration in 2000.

To be held at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, Portland, UK, the Worlds will take place from 13th - 21st August 2020, with more than 500 competitors from across the world expected for the week-long championship. The event is enhanced by the inclusion of the 29er UK Nationals, which will be held in the week prior to the Worlds, giving a perfect pre-Worlds regatta.

Joan Mollerus, President, International 29er Class Association comments '"The International 29er Class is thrilled to bring our World Championship to the waters of Weymouth and Portland in 2020. We are looking forward to top-notch racing, excellent conditions and warm hospitality for sailors and their families alike."

Competitive racing in Weymouth and Portland's world-famous waters, which were host to the 2012 Olympic Games, will be managed by experienced PRO David Campbell-James. Activities on shore will include technical performance workshops from 2020 29er Worlds event sponsors Allen and Marlow, sailor receptions and sailor lounge.

2020 29er Worlds Chair Peter Gordon continues "The 2020 29er Worlds promises to build on the success and excitement of previous 29er World Championships. We are incredibly grateful to the 29er International Class sponsors, Zhik and Ovington for their continuing support and are delighted to welcome new partners for next year's event; Allen, Rockley Watersports, Marlow, OTC, Coast Water Sports, Clif Bar & Company, Dream Cottages and also to FALKINTHEROAD for our fantastic 2020 Worlds logo. Their backing is invaluable and we are looking forward to working with all our sponsors. 29er boat charters are available through class sponsor Ovington.

We are expecting 250 boats, which will make this the largest ever 29er Worlds and here we are, 250 days away from the event happening!"

Peter Allam, CEO of WPNSA, is looking forward to the 29er World Championship returning to Weymouth & Portland. ''We have been privileged to host so many major sailing events since the International 29er Class were last here in 2006 and we are delighted to have another opportunity to welcome 29er sailors from around the world in 2020.''

Back in 2006 the 29er Worlds' competitors included then Olympian, Paul Brotherton and future Olympians Nicola Groves, Dylan Fletcher and Silja Lehtinen. Other entrants included rowing Gold Medallist Matt Gotrel, now signed up with INEOS Team UK and Sail GP, Hannah Diamond, Volvo Ocean Racer and Scott Babbage, Performance Director on the Oracle AC team. Quite a roster call from the 2006 29er Worlds! So the BIG news is that at least one of those sailors in the 2006 Worlds will be making a comeback - the only clue is that they were in the top 20 back in 2006, where will they feature 14 years on?
