29er Worlds at Club Nautico San Isidro, Argentina - Overall

by Event Press 28 Jan 2007 11:19 GMT 18-28 January 2007

For the first time in 29er class World Championships an Argentine team has won the competition. The British female teams were the best in their category.

Matías Gainza Eurnekian & Federico Villambrosa with 30 points are the new world champions of the 29ers International Class. For the first time in the 7 World Championships that were held so far, an Argentinean team came in first. There were 11 countries present on this 29er Class World Championship organized in Buenos Aires, San Isidro, at the Club Náutico San Isidro.

“We are very happy for having won this World Championship. We trained very hard all throughout the year and we are glad to have come in first after so many days of competition. Our next step will be to start our training on a 49er looking forward to participate in Beijing’s Olympic Games. We are aware that less than 2 years is not enough to have excellent results but at the same time we knew it was important to be here and not to jump directly on to the 49er class. We believe we can do well on a 49er and arrive in shape for the Olympics”, said Matías Gainza Eurnekian, 22 years old, with a degree in Commerce.

Because the new world champions were yesterday leading the competition with a large advantage, the rest of the teams competed today for the following best positions. With 51 points, the fellow country team of Pepe Bettini & Matías Keller was second. Ignacio Fernandez Besada & Tigris Martirosjan from Argentina, with 54 points, followed.

On the Silver Fleet, the Swiss team, Natalie Keller & Irina Hotz, that were already yesterday one of favourites to win this Championship, ended in first place with 23 points. Emily Dellenbaugh & Briana Provancha from the United States were second with 33 points and the argentine mixed team of María Agustina Torre & Franco Greggi was next with 43 points.

Today only 3 regattas were completed. The fourth one was suspended after a long delay to start the first one. Near the late afternoon, when the third regatta ended, the Regatta Committee decided not to start the last one according to the rules of this World Championship. The first regatta was delayed because of the lack of wind. At 3:30pm wind at 5knots coming from East and Northeast pushed the boats. The River Plate was calm with short and small waves.

Prize Giving Ceremony:

At 7pm, at the Principal Mast of the Club Náutico San Isidro the Prize Giving Ceremony took place. The National Navy Band, performed Argentina’s National Hymn and immediately after, authorities of the Club started to hand in the prizes to the winners.
