RS Tera South West Regional Training Squad at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club

by Peter Solly 6 Mar 2023 17:30 GMT 4-5 March 2023

The South West Regional Training Squad met on 4th and 5th March for the penultimate winter training session of the season.

In a larger-than-usual format, the South West and Southern Regional Training Squads met for a joint weekend at Sutton Bingham Sailing Club. The weekend was very well attended, with sailors travelling from far and wide - including from as far west as Fowey, and with 7 sailors from Starcross - and it was great for the two regions to meet up: new friends, and more boats to sail against!

The weekend was coached by four experienced RS Tera Class Association coaches, lead by Dylan Collingbourne; and enabled the large group of sailors to split into smaller groups for some of the theory and on-the-water sessions. Saturday saw light winds, and a full day of sailing and on-shore briefings, focussing on mark rounding. Sunday started wind-less, which gave an opportunity for a fitness session. After a session ashore on rules and an early lunch, the wind filled in and sailors had a good afternoon afloat, including several races. The venue was excellent, particularly for the sea sailors not used to fluky, shifty winds on inland lakes - excellent learning.

Sutton Bingham Sailing Club hosted brilliantly, with a friendly and warm welcome; and the galley open all day on both days, serving hot cooked breakfasts and lunches. A lot of effort was put in, and this is much appreciated. Saturday evening activity included a skittles evening, which was well attended and great fun.

Big thanks to Sutton Bingham, the coaches, and particularly to Bruce Wilson (Tera Southern Regional Training Squad parent and Sutton Bingham member) who organised the weekend.

Keep up to date with Tera activity in the South West and South on the facebook groups:

The next South West Regional Traning Squad is at Paignton on 18th March.
