Sailing Chandlery RS200 Northern Tour at the Staunton Harold Sailing Club

by Ann Nugent 3 Jun 12:15 BST 1 June 2024

Staunton Harold's annual Sailing Chandlery sponsored RS200 open meeting took place on Saturday 1st June. Competitors were greeted by something that had not been seen in the East Midlands for quite some time... sunshine!

PRO Grahame Newton set four excellent windward leeward races for the 8 competitors. A pleasant force 3 remained steady all day, with Nigel & Diana Pepperdine taking the gun in the first race. Martin and Barbara Smith from Yorkshire Dales seizing victory in the remaining starts. Close racing prevailed throughout the fleet local sailors Lawrence Hayward and Ann Nugent grabbing a second in race 1 with Ben Deardon and Alice Carter a second place in the last race to again take back to Yorkshire.

It could also be that a certain well known sail maker Mr Steve Graham has finally seen the light. Sailing with daughter Ivy they sailed very well gaining a 3rd in the last. Despite the rumour of some concentration waning a supplement of Haribo sweets kept the team on course. I never knew Steve was partial to a bag of sweets... Now, if you have a 200 for sale I will pass through your details!

Thank you to all the team at Staunton for their help in running the event. And thank you to everyone who took part in what was a thoroughly enjoyable event.

Check out the Sailing Chandlery RS200 Northern Tour 2024 Facebook Group for more details of the final 7 races in the tour.
