The weekend of 15/16th September found the 29er GUL circuit at Chew Valley Lake. Race Officer Peter McLaren set good windward/leeward courses in the Force 2-4 Westerly breeze.

5 races, back to back, were sailed on Saturday afternoon. Leader at the first windward mark was David Evans and Ben Redwood, but local heroes Ben McGrane and James Perry looked determined and, by the last lap, hit the front to win from Stephen Wilson and John Garth, and Edd Clayson and Adam Clarke.

Having won races 2 and 3 from superb, split-second starts, McGrane fell foul of the black flag in race 4. Clayson, Wilson and Richard Peacock took advantage of his absence to score 1,2,3. Race 5 was business as usual as McGrane led from start followed by Tom Dawson and Martin Boatman, recording their best result.

Sunday brought 3 longer races in slightly lighter winds. Race 6 saw a new face at the front as Eamonn King and Paul Davis took the bullet followed by Peacock and Wilson.

In race 7, McGrane fought from 11th place to take the win, narrowly beating Clayson, who had been leading throughout, as the breeze strengthened.

At this stage the consistency of Wilson and Clayson saw them tied for 2nd place so, appropriately they fought for race 8. Clayson led from the start, with Wilson drawing closer each lap. However, Clayson held on to win and take overall 2nd place.

The 21 boat fleet enjoyed good, well organised racing; the race team were impressed by the skills displayed and the fair, but competitive spirit of the young racers. Chew Valley again built on its reputation as an hospitable club for visitors. GUL were warmly thanked for their support.
