405s at the Danish Youth Nationals

by Rosie White and Holly Tuckwood 23 Sep 2002 08:36 BST

13/14 September

A team of 5 405s travelled to Denmark to compete in the Danish Youth Nationals on 13-15th September. Over 200 boats converged on Hundige sailing club, Copenhagen including 33 405s as well as 29ers, Lasers, Optimists, Europes and Zoom 8s.

A Danish coach worked with the British team on Friday to familiarise them with the waters and, although the breeze was light this was valuable experience.

The weather on Saturday was perfect for the championship with a brisk steady force 4-5, which made ideal conditions for trapezing and some exciting downwind sailing. The team sailed well with almost everyone scoring top ten results. The results overnight stood with Rosie White and Tom Peel 3rd, Dylan Fletcher and Nick Hollis 5th, Holly and Sophie Tuckwood 6th, Daniel and Sean Vernon 9th and, Lucy and Alice Wordley 11th.

The conditions were fairly similar on the Sunday, although slightly gustier. Once again the British crews sailed well against the heavier Danish crews, with Rosie and Tom maintaining their position to finish 3rd overall. Dylan and Nick achieved 6th place, the Tuckwoods 8th, the Vernons 11th and the Wordleys 13th.

A thoughouly enjoyable weekend was had by all, with banquets and socialising as well as the sailing.
