405 Open Meeting at Northampton Sailing Club

by Holly Tuckwood 1 Nov 2002 08:37 GMT

Oct. 26/27th 2002

Despite the horrendous weather forecast ten 405 Junior and Youth crews arrived at Pitsford for the End of Season Open. On Saturday all was fine for sailing, with the sun shining and the wind ranging from a force 4 to a 1 for the last race of the day.

Race 1 saw Fiona Reid and Leanne Hibberd take an early lead but the shifty wind produced place changes on both the up and down wind legs. At the finish it was Rosie White & Tom Peel who took the gun with Dylan Fletcher & Nick Hollis 2nd, Holly & Sophie Tuckwood 3rd and Huw Humphries and Max Todd in 4th place.

Race 2 started with a force 4, which was enjoyed by Sophie White and Helen Lasco as they picked their way through the fleet to take first place. Dylan & Nick again sailed well in race 3 to take 1st with Holly & Sophie sneaking into 2nd after passing Rosie & Tom and Sophie & Helen in the last few meters. The final race of the day was played out in dying wind. Dylan & Nick were once again first over the finish line with Rosie & Tom 2nd and William and Andrew 3rd.

The calm evening gave no hint of what was to come on the Sunday. The crews were greeted by spectacular water displays as 70mph winds whipped up the surface into spray and large waves. Despite the disappointing early end to the Open the crews had an enjoyable time in a well organized and very friendly event.
