405 Open Meeting at Rutland Sailing Club

by Bob Tuckwood 10 Apr 2003 11:45 BST

5th/6th April

Saturday morning started dry and pleasant. The wind was about force 3 and shifting about. 18 sailors turned up, ages ranging from 11 to 17 years. The first race got off to a good start (excepting Peter Gray, since he fell out due to a broken toe-strap) and first around the windward mark was Huw Humphreys and Max Todd, closely followed by Holly and Sophie Tuckwood. Huw and Max kept their cool and sailed well to lead throughout and finished first followed by Dylan Fletcher and Nick Hollis.

Race 2 was dominated by the same two boats, both pulling away from the fleet. Dylan and Nick eventually took 1st with Huw and Max 2nd and James and Ed Wilkes 3rd. Dylan and Nick were in the groove and won the following two races leaving Huw and Max to fight for second place with the rest of the fleet.

Sunday was brilliant for Dylan and Nick as they won all three races, but it was a disaster for Huw and Max as they had gear failure, which put them out for the day. The rest of the crews battled for positions, second and third going to the family pairings of James and Ed Wilkes and Holly and Sophie Tuckwood. It was a great start to the 405s summer with lots of good competitive and friendly racing, well organised by Chris Wright and his crew, and we wait to see if Dylan and Nick can be reined in!
