Entrants sought for Windsor Cup Regatta

by Lauren Nixon 29 Jul 2003 21:50 BST

Entrants are being sought for the 7th annual Windsor Cup Regatta which is being held at the beginning of September. The event starts on the evening of the 5th with a drinks reception, followed by a barbecue and live music. Entrants will be up bright and early to take part in the two races taking place in the Solent on Saturday 6th. The winners will then be able to celebrate their success that evening with the other competitors at a prize giving dinner being held in the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron.

This event has been very well received in previous years and it is hoped that this year more entrants than ever before will take part and help to raise money for the Jubilee Sailing Trust (JST). This worthwhile charity offers the challenge of tall ship sailing to all, regardless of physical ability. The JST own and operate the only tall ships in the world, the LORD NELSON and TENACIOUS which have been specially designed to enable able-bodied and disabled people to work side by side in a truly integrated environment.

Funds are always needed to help maintain the two ships and to provide bursaries for those who would not otherwise be able to afford to sail. Events like the Windsor Cup Regatta are invaluable in their support. The Windsor Cup Regatta has helped to raise in excess of £80,000 in the seven years that it has been running. Each year has built on the success of its predecessors and it is hoped that this year’s event will surpass all expectations. Interest in participating is already high but the more people who enter the more money that will be raised. It doesn’t matter if you don’t have your own boat, if you can muster a crew the JST have details for chartering yachts.

There is an early bird entry fee of £100 for applicants who send in their entry form before 15 August. This fee includes race management and berthing. There is also a £75 per person fee for the reception, barbecue and dinner.

A wonderful weekend of sailing and on shore entertainment awaits those who are willing to undertake the challenge offered by this special regatta. Racing for charity really is a worthwhile cause. Please contact Kate MacDougall on 023 8044 9108 for an entry form and further details.
