Warta-Polpharma expected in Marseilles from tomorrow

by Mireille Vatine 8 Apr 2001 19:22 BST

Warta-Polpharma is just 500 miles away from Marseilles's Vieux Port where she is expected on Monday night or Tuesday morning. A strong Mistral might hinder the boat's progress on Monday, forcing her to slow down so as not to risk breaking anything at the end of this race.

The Polish boat passed through Gibraltar Straits yesterday at 2037 GMT, with a westerly wind rising to 30 knots in the passage which is barely 20 miles wide. But then it was light airs waiting for them in the Mediterranean, suddenly killing their speed. But they are off again now at an average of 14 knots. The boat and the crew are in fine shape as Roman confirmed with his shore team which has arrived in Marseilles.

Roman Paszke's crew had the happy surprise last night of crossing the Polish ship Pogoria, on board which there must have been a good number of supporters of our Poles, who have become national stars. "I would have loved to have climbed aboard, just to see some other faces than the crew with which I have been sailing now for more than 90 days", joked Dariusz Drapella in an exchange of messages with the Captain of the Pogoria.

But at the end of their race, the state of mind of the sailors seems to be decidedly the same as on the 3 other boats which have already finished: the joy of seeing family and friends again, but also the apprehension of stepping ashore and the desire to remain at sea for ever and ever. "What does land have in store for us?" asks the crew...

And well, on shore, there's no doubt, the sailors are eagerly awaited now and a strong delegation of relatives, friends and journalists or just simply fans, have invested the Phocaean City and today have already started to celebrate the imminent arrival of Warta-Polpharma.

Far behind, Team Legato is having a job to beat against the wind and has only covered 180 miles in the last 24 hours. Polled at a speed of barely 4 knots at the last position report and a little over 1000 miles from Marseilles, the English boat will probably not cross the finishing line before Thursday or Friday, unless weather conditions are particularly favourable for her in the Mediterranean.
