Warta Polpharma expected to arrive in Marseilles tomorrow

by Mireille Vatine 9 Apr 2001 19:36 BST

The Polish catamaran should cross the finish line of The Race on the 100th day of the event sometime between midday and 16h00. As the wind dropped for several hours last night, the Poles only covered 200 miles in the last 24 hours and they still have 282 miles to go before the finish. The Mistral wind weakened a little today and Warta Polpharma should run into some nice sailing weather for the hours of her race.

Here in Marseilles, lots of friends, family and journalists are waiting for the crew to arrive so they can get down to the business of celebrating the end of this circumnavigation which has been a veritable "tour de force". For all the means are modest, this team is blessed with a remarkable fighting spirit.

There is no doubting that Marseilles will give a warm welcome indeed to this boat and her crew, just like her three predecessors. Warta Polpharma will be mooring up alongside the pontoon in front of the Town Hall, where the prize-giving podium will be set up.

As for the British boat, Team Legato, they are still out in the Atlantic Ocean some 200 miles away from Gibraltar which they should pass tomorrow morning. They still have a little over 900 miles to sail before they too can complete their voyage round the world. Tony Bullimore and his crew continue to sail into the wind, a point of sail which they know only too well. The oldest boat in The Race has been sailing almost exclusively head to wind since the Falklands. It does not look as though that is about to change in the hours to come. Only passing through the Strait of Gibraltar might free them from this point of sail which is difficult for any multihull to bear.
