After the Poles finish, Team Legato crew breaks a leg

Decidedly, there is something in the air.
As the Poles on board Warta Polpharma were getting ready to cross the finishing line of The Race, one of Team Legato's crew broke a leg when the boat crashed into a wave. Slava Sisenko, the 47-year old Ukrainian crew member, fractured his left shin bone, as he was in the process of manoeuvring on deck during a sail change. This is the second time that his leg has broken in the same place. Tony Bullimore treated him in his capacity
as medical referee on board and Slava will be resting in the skipper's bunk
until the boat finishes in Marseille, which is still likely to be during
Friday daytime.
Barely 13 miles from Gibraltar at the time of the accident, Tony Bullimore
first thought about diverting so that Slava Sisenko could be hospitalised :
"No way", said Slava during a telephone conversation with Team Legato's
shore crew. "I'm determined to finish THE RACE and don't want to leave the
boat. My leg is immobilised and I'm not suffering that much. I can put up
with it for 3 or 4 days, the time it'll take us to get to the finish."
Tony Bullimore confirmed that for the time being, he was quite happy to fall
in line with Slava's demands but that he would not loose sight of the fact
that if his condition worsened, he would not think twice about stopping in
the Mediterranean to receive treatment in the right sort of conditions.
In Marseilles, Roman and his team who are tired after their
circumnavigation, have celebrated the end of The Race with their families
and friends.
"We are very moved by the incredible welcome we have received here and are
very happy to have finished the race » said Warta Polpharma's skipper during
a press conference organised yesterday evening. « What has left the greatest
impression on us all is the fact that we made a whole country dream as we
sailed around the world."
