Mistral World Championships - Day 6

by Nigel Cherrie 19 Nov 1999 17:40 GMT

LIGHT WINDS PLAGUE PENULTIMATE DAY OF MISTRAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Another day of uncharacteristically light and shifty conditions at Noumea in the Pacific's French Polynesian Islands led to a further turn around in the results, leaving RYA Team GBR's Christine Johnston and Nick Dempsey, who both started the week in superb form, with a lot to do if they are to make the top twenty after tomorrow's final race.

Dempsey (from Peterborough) sailed an exceptional first race today to finish eighth across the line but wasn't able to reproduce the same form in the second race, finishing twenty fifth, which leaves him in twenty first position. At the head of the fleet, Pre Olympic winner Lars Kleppich (Australia) has a seven-point lead over Tony Philp (Fiji) with one race remaining.

In the women's fleet, which has been won by defending champion Barbara Kendall (New Zealand) with a day to spare, World Class Performance sailor Christine Johnston drops to twenty seventh overall, once place in front of Helen Cartwright.

No overall men's gold fleet results are currently available due to a number of outstanding protests.
